The opening of Waltz with Bashir uses a rich audio tapestry to set the scene. Thumping techno plays in the background as the snarls and pants of the dogs come into the fore and carry the sense of danger from the screen to the ears. 102 different sound channels were used in this film, so it is clear that for Folman, the quality and immersion of the audio was an integral element of the film’s production process. As Ohad Landesman writes, in ‘Animated Recollection and Spectatorial Experience in Waltz with Bashir‘:

“…the opening sequence creates an unmooring audio-visual spectacle that assaults the audience’s senses, shakes them out of their comfort zone, and immediately immerses them in the film’s world. It is no wonder, then, that the film was received with both amazement and horror, awards and admonishment.
